The History of Stockings (Abbreviated Version)
Stockings… we don’t use them as much anymore. It seems more convenient to pull on a
pair of pantyhose or simply go with nothing on our legs, but I thought that the history of stockings was kind of interesting.
They can be traced by to the first century AD. They are Roman in origin, a kind of sock designed to protect the feet. As time passed, they became thinnner and longer. Suddenly stocking were considered a topic not to be discussed in polite company as legs were seldom seen. Things sure have changed!!
During the war years, nylon was removed from the garment industry. That meant women couldn’t buy one of their favorite accessories! That led to improvisation. They came up with an ingenious way of showing off their legs. They used an eye liner pencil to draw a line down the back of their bare legs. (Stockings in the forties featured a thin black seam!) Apparently they were quite sexy!
