The Diamonds Four C’s

by Nikki Katz on October 22nd, 2005

Let’s learn about the Four C’s when it comes to Diamonds:

Platinum Solstice Solitaire Engagement Ring, 1/2 Carat Round Diamond

Carat:
The carat is the weight of the diamond. A carat is one fifth of a gram. Each carat is also divided into 100 points, to describe the size of a smaller diamond. The bigger the weight, the more valuable the diamond.

Cut:
The cut is the faceting of the diamond face. The most ideal cut allows the light to refract from facet to facet so that no light is lost.

Color:
Diamonds naturally come in every color, although most people like those that are white in color. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) rates the color in a white diamond from D (no color) to Z (light yellow).

Clarity:
A diamond’s clarity is calculated by the amount of flaws, and the location of those flaws, in the diamond when viewed under 10x magnification. The GIA rates clarity anywhere from Flawless to Imperfect 3.
